Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pierced silver dishes became prominent in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often serving as decorative centrepieces for fruit, sweetmeats, or bread. The technique of fretwork cutting allowed silversmiths to showcase intricate craftsmanship while reducing the overall weight of precious metal.

Silversmiths created pierced metalwork using specialised hand saws and chisels to cut filigree and scrollwork designs directly into sheet silver. Decorative borders, such as cast grapevine and foliage motifs, were frequently hand-chased and soldered to the rim for structural stability.

Authentic pieces feature official hallmarking stamps, which typically include a purity mark such as the lion passant for British sterling silver, an assay office stamp, a date letter, and a makers mark. Inspecting the hand-cut piercings under magnification will also reveal slight tool variations, distinguishing antique work from modern machine stamping.

Style the bowl as a central accent on a dining table, sideboard, or coffee table to introduce reflective metallic contrast against natural materials like wood or marble. It functions effectively either empty as a sculptural statement or filled with fruit, decorative objects, or botanicals.

Clean silver periodically using a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish formulated specifically for antique metals to prevent excessive tarnish build-up. Avoid harsh chemical dips, and use a soft-bristled brush to gently clear residual polish from detailed pierced fretwork and chased leaves.
