French Utrillo - Like View of a Paris Suburb with Figures Oil on Canvas.

1920 - 1940
Description

Having been brought up in the centre of France, Raymond Besse arrived in Paris in 1916, aged just 17. He participated for the first time in the Salon des Indépendants in 1923, then participated in many other salons, including the Salon d'Automne. His favourite subjects were the grittier suburbs of Paris, and his paintings bear witness to life in working-class neighbourhoods during the first half of the century. In this respect, he very much resembled Utrillo, whose key interest was similar. Here is is quite an early work by the artist, dating from circa 1930. It depicts the a southern suburb, Athis-Mons. The oil on canvas is signed at the lower left and situated by the artist on the verso. Measuring 46 x 55 cm, the overall framed size is 61 x 70cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century French landscapes often feature architectural subjects, heavy impasto techniques, and muted colour palettes depicting suburban Paris or provincial towns.

Artists typically used stretched linen or cotton canvas ground with gesso, applying oil pigments with palette knives or stiff brushes, framed in timber mouldings.

Examine the signature, age-appropriate craquelure, paint impasto texture, stretchers, canvas ageing on the reverse, and period framing techniques.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a console table or mantelpiece, paired with minimalist decor to highlight the texture and architectural details.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush without applying chemical cleaners.
