White Cottage - Antique Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

Oil on canvas signed by Elysee Fabry (1882 - 1949). The work is vibrant, generously painted and typical of the artists work.

Élysée Fabry started working as a locksmith but was attracted by art and started to practice watercolour painting.

In 1916, he learned about oil painting and met Richard Heintz who gave him his first advice (1916-1917) and then Alphonse Caron. He then became a member of the Cercle “L'Envol” in Liège and among his friends where the painters Alfred Martin, Modeste-Jean Lhomme, Charles Caty, Max Gobiet and Henri Leroux.

He settled in La Gleize in the Amblève valley and drew his inspiration from the Ardennes landscape. He was a nature lover and often painted panoramic views of the Ardennes - particularly the Amblève valley . The subjects of his paintings were often trees, forests, farms, views of villages and their churches.

He took part in collective exhibitions in Liège (notably at the “Galerie d'Art du Journal La Meuse” in 1925 and 1926) and in Brussels (at the gallery “Le Salonnet” with the Cercle d'Art L'Envol ).

In 1923, he exhibited in Brussels at the Mommen gallery with Alice Ronner , Louis Crespin and Ernest Welvaert. In 1933, he presented two paintings at the Triennial Salon in Ghent : La cascade de Coo and Paysage à La Gleize .

Strongly influenced by Heintz , he adopted a synthetic style with a frank and powerful touch, with nuanced and harmonious colors.
