Antique Silver WWI Red Cross Pin Cushion

1900 - 1920
Description

A classic Red Cross solid sterling silver pin cushion, hallmarked for Chester 1916. It carries the maker's mark of S Blanckensee & Sons Ltd.

The condition is good, better than others I have had in stock in the past. The base is weighted, making this as useful as a paper weight as it is a pin cushion.

Dimensions:

Diameter: 6cm

Height: 2cm

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian era and the First World War, silversmiths produced novelty and commemorative silver pin cushions in various symbolic forms, including military motifs and emblems such as the Red Cross, serving both practical sewing purposes and commemorative roles.

These items were typically constructed from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver bases, often weighted for stability, and fitted with velvet or wool cushion inserts held securely within the metal frame.

Authentic pieces feature British assay hallmarks or makers marks stamped onto the silver rim or base, often accompanied by design registration numbers (RD numbers) that indicate the specific year the design was patented.

A silver pin cushion can be styled as a decorative desktop curio, arranged alongside historical silver boxes on a dressing table, or integrated into a glass-fronted display cabinet with other small antiques.

The silver surface should be cleaned using a soft microfiber cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding contact between the chemical cleaners and the original velvet cushion insert to prevent staining or textile degradation.
