Description

Very Large 19th c. Landscape Painting by Thomas Creswick R.A.

This is a very nice landscape painting from the mid 19th century.

The painting depicts a herd of cows in a stream and a flock of sheep sheltering between a group of trees.

To the right is a lady on horse back in the stream who could be the herder of the livestock.

To the far right is a lady walking across a wooden bridge holding a basket on her head.

At the far left one can see a farmstead and to the left of the trees one can see in the distance a village.

At the bottom left corner underneath the tree trunks there stands the signature T. Creswick R.A.

Thomas Creswick (1811 - 1869) was an English landscape painter and illustrator, he is one of the bast-known member of the Birmingham school.

We have chosen to leave the painting in it's original state as found, to leave a restoration and or framing to the expert.

The painting has been found in a dry attic, and must have been there for many of years, as the are no damp patches or paint loss,

and no holes, the wooden frame what holds the canvas is in a dusty but good condition (missing a couple of stretchers), as stated

the painting comes without a frame.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century British landscape painting often emphasised naturalistic representations of rural life, pastoral scenery, and changing atmospheric effects, heavily influenced by Romanticism and the Victorian appreciation for nature.

Victorian landscape paintings typically feature oil paint applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, mounted onto wooden strainers or stretchers, and framed in timber mouldings.

Authentic pieces generally display natural age craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the reverse of the canvas or wooden stretcher, and period-correct artist signatures or gallery labels.

A large pastoral oil painting creates a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard, contrasting effectively against both dark heritage paint colours and contemporary neutral backdrops.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush and consulting a conservator for varnish restoration.
