English blue and white transfer printed pearlware chestnut basket, circa 1800

Staffordshire 'Long Bridge' willow pattern printed in dark blue.

Hand pierced basket weave design with twig handles.

Small chips to the outside base rim of the basket, a scratch and light wear in the well of the stand, otherwise in good, sound, bright condition, with no other damage or repair.

Finely potted earthenware with a rippled pale blue pearlware glaze.

The basket 10,1/2" or 267mm across the handles, the base 11,1/4" or 285mm across.

Gross weight 979 grams.

A pearlware chestnut basket is a specialised ceramic serving vessel developed in Britain during the late eighteenth century. Designed with openwork lattice sides to allow steam to escape from warm roasted chestnuts, these vessels were crafted using lead glaze modified with cobalt oxide to create a slightly bluish surface hue.
