An Early 19th Century Pearl Glazed Basket.

The basket of oval shape, the rim with an entwined ribbon, over the reeded body, sweeping in a concave profile, through an entwined and gathered middle, to meet the reeded bood. The cnetre with a basket weave decoration, surrounding a diamond motif. The base finished with a small raised foot rim.

Date circa 1820.

Height 2 1/2 inches, 6.5cm.

Pearlware is a type of fine white earthenware developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late eighteenth century. It is distinguished by the addition of cobalt oxide to the glaze, which neutralised the yellowish tone of earlier creamware and created a slightly bluish finish.

These items were crafted from refined earthenware clay, often using press moulds for the base and hand-cutting or assembling delicate lattice strips for the openwork sides. The piece was then dipped in a blue-tinted glaze and fired in a kiln.

Authentic pearlware often exhibits distinct blue pooling of glaze in crevices, joints, and around footrims. The ceramic body is lightweight compared to later ironstone, and the glaze frequently displays fine crazing.

A ceramic basket functions well on a sideboard top or as a centrepiece on a dining table, displayed either empty to showcase its openwork structure or filled with natural elements like dried fruit or greenery.
