Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in seventeenth-century Britain, coffers served as the primary storage units for household linens, clothing, and valuables. Geometric mouldings and joined oak frame construction are classic indicators of joinery techniques from this period.

Traditional coffers were predominantly constructed from solid English oak, joined using wooden dowels or mortise and tenon joinery. Hardware such as iron hinges, straps, and lock escutcheons were hand-forged.

Authentic period coffers feature hand-hewn timber marks, hand-carved geometric panelling, wooden peg joinery, and natural wood shrinkage around the joints. Original ironwork and historic wear around the base stiles also indicate genuine age.

An antique coffer can be positioned at the foot of a bed for linen storage or placed in an entryway as a storage bench. It can also function as a central coffee table alternative in a living room, providing contrast against modern upholstery.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood split development.
