Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, an oak coffer served as a primary secure storage vessel for household linens, textiles, garments, and valuable possessions. During the 17th and 18th centuries, these wooden trunks were essential domestic furnishings, frequently gifted as part of a marriage dowry.

Period coffers were hand-crafted using solid quarter-sawn oak joined with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden dowel pegs. Panels were often hand-planed with carved relief decoration on the front face, integrated with heavy iron hinges and brass or iron escutcheons.

Authentic period coffers exhibit irregularities from hand-planing on the back and underside boards, wooden peg construction rather than modern nails, and naturally aged oxidation inside the wood. Wear patterns around the base stiles, lock plate, and lid hinges also indicate genuine historical age.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal point at the foot of a bed, within an entry hallway for footwear storage, or as a coffee table in a living space. The dark timber and textured carvings add grounding historic contrast to modern neutral schemes.

Preserve the timber by applying a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain its patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent shrinkage or cracking of the solid oak panels.
