The trestle table is one of the earliest forms of wooden dining furniture in Western Europe, dating back to the medieval period. Designed to be easily assembled and dismantled, these tables consisted of loose planks resting on sturdy wooden trestle frames connected by stretchers.

Seventeenth century tables were constructed primarily from native quarter-sawn oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with hand-carved wooden pegs. Tops were crafted from thick oak planks, and lower stretchers provided structural support while keeping feet off cold stone floors.
