Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A refectory table is a long, narrow dining table originally designed for communal dining in medieval monasteries. Over time, the design evolved into a staple of domestic dining spaces, characterised by solid wood construction and sturdy trestle bases.

Refectory tables from the 18th century were predominantly crafted from solid native hardwoods, most commonly European oak. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hewn wood surfaces, uneven wear patterns on footrests or stretchers, and traditional peg construction. The timber often displays deep oxidisation and a rich patina developed over centuries of polish and use.

An antique refectory table works exceptionally well as a dining focal point juxtaposed with modern minimalist chairs. Its long, narrow proportions also make it suitable as a grand hall table or behind a large sofa in an open-plan living space.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood finish. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources or in damp conditions to prevent timber movement.
