Welsh Oak Lowboy Side Table, Circa 1760

Description

Low Welsh side table or lowboy in native Welsh oak, with a moulded-edged top above a central rectangular drawer flanked by square drawers, all with chequer inlay of holly and bog oak, above a shaped frieze with an intricate and flowing fretted design. The ends and rear aprons are also shaped and the whole is raised on square legs.

It has possibly lost a little height but because the legs are slender would never have been the usual height for a side table.

The two main forms of elaboration on vernacular furniture from south Wales were inlay and fretwork, but they are very rarely combined on the same piece.

Good colour and surface.

(Right-hand drawer repaired; some replaced inlay; bottom of rear right leg replaced)

Illustrated in "Welsh Furniture 1250:1950" plate 712, and the so-called "sadness patch" in the end is shown in plate 836.
