A fine 18th Century Oak Lowboy with well shaped cabriole legs and nicely carved beak foot, in superb original condition retaining the original handles. The drawers and top are inlaid with a Walnut cross banding, the edge of the top is moulded with a quadrant bead and has nicely worked carved rounded corners. The Oak drawer linings are in very good clean original condition just as we like to see them.

A lowboy is a small table featuring drawers, introduced during the late 17th and 18th centuries in England and North America. Designed primarily as a dressing table or side table, it features elevated legs, typically cabriole or turned, and an arrangement of drawers around a central kneehole arch.

18th-century lowboys were commonly crafted from native hardwoods such as English oak, walnut, and later mahogany. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid wood drawer linings, and cast brass backplate handles or drop handles.

Authentic period lowboys display signs of hand-tooling, including irregular hand-cut dovetails, pit-saw or adze marks on unexposed back and underside surfaces, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Original brass handles will show casting imperfections and historic oxidisation around keyholes and backplates.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as an entryway console table, a compact hallway piece, or a side table in a drawing room. Its compact proportions allow it to contrast against contemporary backdrops while offering functional drawer storage.

Maintain the piece by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber patination. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources, radiators, or strong sunlight to prevent moisture loss and wood movement.
