1894 silver pocket watch, John Hawley, Hatton Garden.
The watch has a fusee movement which is working nicely. The movement has various engravings, ''gold & silver medals awarded'', ''52 Hatton Garden EC and Coventry'', ''Reliable Trademark Registered''.
The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover. The cover is signed John Hawley & Son, London EC, Estb''d 1857. The business was originally named John Hawley but was changed to include ''& Son'' when John Hawley Jnr joined the company. This particular watch was made some four years after John Hawley Snr retired.
The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the back covers for Birmingham 1894 with a maker''s mark JH. The front of the case is in good condition. The hinged case back has unevenness commensurate with its age.
In addition to making watches, John Hawley also made watch cases. The maker''s mark was registered at the London Assay Office on 14 February 1887.
The inside of the case back has a previous owner''s name scratched in, ''J Robt Dodds, Cranhill, 1917''. Cranhill is on the outskirts of Glasgow and in the 1950s was developed to provide homes to alleviate the post-war housing shortage. A gentleman by the same name is recorded as living in Glasgow and sailing on his first naval ship in July 1917.
The watch glass is in lovely condition.
The dial is signed John Hawley & Son, London. There are a few hairline cracks around the edge of the dial.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
