Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur du jour is a writing desk design featuring a flat writing surface topped with a raised superstructure of small drawers, shelves, or central mirror-fronted cupboards. Originating in 18th-century France, the design was widely manufactured throughout the Victorian era as a dedicated desk for personal correspondence.

Craftsmen typically constructed these desks using walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often layered with burr walnut veneers and detailed marquetry inlays. Hardware and decorative trim commonly feature cast brass or ormolu mounts alongside leather inset writing surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, natural shrinkage lines along veneer seams, and period-appropriate cast brass fittings. Examining the underside and back panels typically reveals hand-sawn secondary timbers with uneven tool markings.

Placing the desk within a hallway alcove, bedroom bay window, or home office provides a functional workspace while acting as a visual focal point. Combining the desk with contemporary desk accessories or modern artwork creates a balanced, layered room scheme.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid veneer lifting or timber contraction. Regular application of pure beeswax preserves the wood finish, whereas chemical polishes should be avoided to prevent residue buildup on marquetry work.
