Victorian Burr Walnut & Oak Pedestal Desk with Leather Top C.1880

19th century
Description

A fine quality Victorian pedestal desk dating from circa 1880, constructed in oak with beautifully figured burr walnut drawer fronts throughout.

The desk is fitted with an attractive burgundy hide writing surface with gilt and blind-tooled decoration, above a central frieze drawer and six graduating pedestal drawers, providing excellent storage. The oak-lined drawers are traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and retain their original turned walnut knobs. The central drawer is lockable and is supplied with two keys.

The sides and rear are fully panelled, allowing the desk to stand freely within a room if desired. The rich burr walnut veneers display outstanding natural figuring, contrasting beautifully with the warm oak framework.

A handsome and practical Victorian desk, equally suited to a study, library or home office.

Presented in very good antique condition with a pleasing colour and patina. The hide writing surface has light age-related wear consistent with careful use, adding to the character of the piece.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk consists of a rectangular top resting on two free-standing pedestals containing stacked drawers. Produced predominantly between 1837 and 1901, these desks typically feature socio-economic status markers such as rich wood veneers, polished brass or turned timber handles, and leather inset writing surfaces with gilded tooling.

Late Victorian desks frequently utilised highly figured wood veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or oak for the visible exterior, while solid oak or pine served as secondary woods for drawer linings and internal framing. Writing surfaces were typically inset with natural skiver leather finished with blind or gold leaf tooling.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass lever locks, and evidence of hand-tooling on the secondary timber backings. Veneers from this era display natural surface shrinkage and minor crazing consistent with age, while the pedestals often separate into three distinct sections for transport.

A Victorian pedestal desk can serve as the central feature in a modern home office or library when balanced against contemporary lighting and minimalist seating. The warmth of the timber provides visual contrast in modern neutral rooms while offering practical storage and workspace.

Preserve the burr walnut finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly and dusting regularly with a soft cloth. Keep the leather surface conditioned using a dedicated leather balm, and position the furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lift.
