The art of silk embroidery was well developed in Uzbekistan during the 19th century. Fine silk embroideries on cotton backgrounds, referred to as ''suzanis'', were often made in domestic settings by the womenfolk in preparation for a bride''s dowry. Therefore they were often made to a very high standard and endowed with great meaning. Various locations in Uzbekistan such as Bokhara, Nurata and Kermina all developed their own individual style and character. Samarkand was no exception. Easily recognisable by their large flowerheads and flowing meandering vines, Samarkand suzanis have an elegance and sophistication of their own. This piece fits into the group. It has a dramatic suzani with large, elegantly drawn flowerheads and meandering vines, but it has a simplicity which suggests a provincial origin. It is totally charming and extremely decorative, and would look wonderful on a bed, wall or as a table cover. Backed and lined.
