Chair Stunning Rare John Shadford Windsor Lincolnshire C1860

19th century
Description

Here we have an outstanding Victorian John Shadford Caistor Lincolnshire Beech, Ash and Elm Windsor armchair c1860. We have a few of these chairs and the rocking chair version through our business over the last 12 years and this is by far the best colour we have seen. The chair has retained some of the original stain with the wear in all the right places. As with all Shadford chairs they follow the same design with only the idiosyncratic differences you would expect from a hand made chair. There is a broad top rail with beautiful turned spindles below. John Shadford was a wood turner as well as a chair maker hence the reason these are the best turned spindles you will see on any Windsor chair. There are further turned spindles to the lower section along with plain and turned arm supports. The side supports and legs are also beautifully turned. The legs are joined by an H stretcher. The top rail is made from Beech as are the arms. The seat is made from a stunning peice of thick Elm and the rest of the chair is Ash. Probably the best Shadford chair we have had. A stunning period chair from a great maker in fantastic retail condition ready for your home. The dimensions are approx 42 inches high 24 wide and 16 deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A regional Victorian Windsor armchair is a traditional English chair featuring a solid carved wood seat, turned spindle back, shaped crest rail, and turned legs wedged directly into the seat base.

Windsor chairs were constructed using native British hardwoods, frequently pairing an elm seat for grain stability with ash, yew, or beech for turned spindles, legs, and steam-bent elements.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-turned spindles, wedged mortise-and-tenon joinery visible underneath the seat, natural operational wear on the stretchers, and regional design features or maker stamps on the seat timber.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece alongside contemporary side tables, pair it with modern textiles, or place it adjacent to a writing desk in a home office.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, dust regularly with a clean microfiber cloth, and apply clear beeswax polish periodically to retain the timber finish.
