Frederick Landseer Griggs Ink Drawing Of Cassey-compton, Glos.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Mark Jones Antiques

Frederick Landseer Griggs (British, 1876-1938) ''Cassey-Compton, Glos.'', signed and dated ''F. L. Griggs - 1905'' and inscribed to the margin ''To Una Atherton Clarke, from F. L. Griggs - Campden, 1906.'', original black ink drawing heightened with white, 11 x 23.5cm, in original mount and original ebonised oak frame, 32cm high, 42cm wide, 1.5cm deep.

Provenance: Una Atherton Clarke (1876-1957) an American author, who married Arthur Price Hunt (1875-1925) in 1908; Private Collection of Alan Tucker (1934-2017) Bookseller, Stroud, Gloucestershire, U.K.

Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs RA RE (30 October 1876 – 7 June 1938) was an etcher, architectural draughtsman, illustrator, and early conservationist, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in the Cotswolds, centred in Chipping Campden. He was one of the first etchers to be elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. He inspired and befriended Gordon Russell, whose furniture he collected, and collaborated with Ernest Gimson in architectural and design work.

Griggs drew this work for publication in Highways & Byways in Oxford & The Cotswolds, first published in 1905, which he illustrated in full, along with a series of other county volumes, for Macmillan & Co. (see our images of the relevant entry). It is our theory that he presented the work to Una Atherton Clarke as she was residing in Cassey Compton House in 1906, the year of her 30th birthday.

Cassey Compton House is a Grade II listed 17th century Manor House, with later additions, in Withington Gloucestershire.
