Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A canterbury is a specialized piece of mobile wooden furniture featuring slotted upper compartments and often a lower drawer. Originally designed in the late 18th century to hold sheet music or bound folios, they later adapted as general magazine and periodical holders in drawing rooms and libraries.

Nineteenth-century canterburys were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently incorporating carved detailing. Functional elements typically included hand-dovetailed drawer linings and brass castors attached to turned wood legs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, and original brass cup castors. Additional markers include age-appropriate patination on the timber, natural oxidisation on the interior drawer surfaces, and early construction hardware.

A canterbury serves effectively in modern spaces as a side-table accent, a sofa-end storage unit for contemporary periodicals, or a dedicated holder for art books. Its compact scale allows placement beside seating areas, reading nooks, or home office desks.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Position the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, surface cracking, and finish fading.
