Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Soumak kilim is a type of flatweave rug produced using a supplementary weft wrapping technique, creating a thicker and more durable surface than standard flatweaves. Historically woven by tribal groups across Persia and the Caucasus, including Kurdish weavers, these textiles feature distinctive geometric patterns.

Traditional Kurdish Soumak textiles are handwoven using hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft threads. The technique involves wrapping coloured weft threads around pairs of warp threads in a continuous brocading pattern, producing a smooth front face and loose yarn strands on the reverse.

Authentic antique Soumak pieces are identified by hand-spun wool, natural dye variation known as abrash, and loose threads left on the underside. Additionally, older examples display precise hand-executed geometric motifs, subtle asymmetry, and age-consistent wear along the selvedges.

A tribal Soumak kilim provides texture and geometric structure when placed on hardwood or stone flooring in hallways, dining areas, or living spaces. Its rich palette works effectively to ground minimalist interiors or complement traditional timber furniture.

Flatweave rugs should be vacuumed gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to prevent snagging the woven strands. Professional cleaning is recommended for thorough maintenance, alongside the use of an underlay to prevent slipping and uneven wear.
