Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Davenport desk is a compact writing cabinet with a sloped lid and side drawers, named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the original design from Gillows of Lancaster in the late 18th century. The style gained popularity throughout the 19th century as essential furniture for private correspondence.

Victorian Davenports were commonly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often finished with figurative veneers like burr walnut or rosewood. Secondary woods inside drawers typically included pine or mahogany, complimented by brass gallery rails and castors.

Authentic Victorian Davenports exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, period brass hardware, original castors, and characteristic scroll supports. Veneers like burr walnut display natural variations, while interior compartments often retain original leather blotters or inkwell fittings.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk functions well in alcoves, entry halls, or small study nooks. Pairing the piece with neutral wall finishes and minimalist table lamps allows the figure of the walnut veneer to serve as a focal point.

Burr walnut requires placement away from direct sunlight and modern heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and occasional application of high-quality beeswax nourishes the timber and maintains the finish.
