Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mid-nineteenth century library bookcase typically features a two-part construction consisting of a glazed upper section for displaying books and a solid cupboard base for enclosed storage. Constructed during the Victorian era, these pieces are characterised by substantial timber framing, classical moulding details, and decorative architectural accents such as carved corbels.

Victorian bookcases were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods, with flame mahogany and oak being the most favoured materials. Glazed panels were fitted with hand-blown or drawn cylinder glass, held in place by timber glazing bars or moulded door frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original glass with minor surface imperfections, and aged timber with natural patination. Additional indicators include hand-planed backboards, brass locks, and construction marks where the upper glazing section rests onto the base.

A classic library bookcase serves as a dramatic focal point in contemporary living rooms, dining rooms, or home offices. Interior designers often use the upper shelves to display ceramics, glassware, or art objects alongside books to create a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting.
