Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These lamp stands were originally crafted in Italy during the 19th century, frequently adapted from pricket candlesticks or oil lamp bases. They feature hand-carved wooden structures coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf, reflecting Renaissance, Baroque, or Rococo revival aesthetics.

Carvers fashioned the core form from softwoods such as pine or lime. Artisans then applied multiple layers of gesso plaster, carved fine surface details, and laid thin sheets of gold leaf, which were burnished using agate stones to create a reflective metallic finish.

Authentic period pieces show natural wear where the underlying red or grey clay bole and white gesso show through the gilded surface. Genuine items also exhibit hand-carving marks, historical wiring conversions, and age-related wood shrinkage along structural joins.

A giltwood table lamp can be placed on a contemporary sideboard, console table, or desk to provide textual contrast against plain walls. Pairing ornate gold bases with simple silk or linen shades balances traditional craftsmanship with clean-lined modern decor.

Dust giltwood regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster. Never apply water, liquid cleaning agents, or chemical polishes, as these can dissolve the gesso substrate and permanently strip away the delicate gold leaf layer.
