Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Twin-arm wall sconces gained widespread popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries across Europe, primarily used to double the illumination from candles in grand reception rooms. Often crafted with neoclassical or rococo motifs, these fixtures were designed to reflect light off backplates or mirrored surfaces to brighten dark interiors.

19th-century wall light brackets were predominantly made from hand-carved timber, cast brass, bronze, or gesso-coated wood. The surfaces were frequently finished with gold leaf gilding, dark lacquer, or dark bronzing, while candleholders incorporated tallow drips and wooden or cardboard sleeves.

Authentic 19th-century examples display evidence of hand-carving with slight asymmetries between pairs, along with hand-applied gilding showing natural surface wear or oxidisation. Look for original mounting hardware, hand-cut timber backing plates, and signs of later electrification conversion around the sockets.

Position antique gilded sconces symmetrically on either side of a large chimneypiece mirror, artwork, or sideboard to create a focused focal point. The rich metallic patina provides a textured contrast against modern paint finishes, bringing warm architectural character to corridors and reception spaces.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent chipping fragile gold leaf or gesso layers. Avoid using liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical polishes, as moisture can dissolve historic water gilding and damage the underlying timber.
