Description

A pretty French pair of carved giltwood, Toleware and polychrome twin arm wall lights, the toleware leaf scrolling arms with wooden scalloped candle sconces, issuing from an ornate bulbous scalloped green and gilt wooden backplate, very decorative and nice patination. Fully rewired and PAT tested. All our chandeliers come with ceiling fixings and spare bulbs.

French giltwood wall lights, or appliques, originated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as decorative wall fixtures designed to amplify candlelight. They feature hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf, often accented with naturalistic motifs such as leaves, scrollwork, and urns.

These fixtures were carved from softwoods such as lime or pine, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and gilded using thin gold leaf. Polychrome finishes involved applying painted pigments alongside the gilding to highlight carved details.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving irregularities, slight shrinkage cracks in the wood underneath the gesso, and natural wear where the red or grey bole beneath the gilding shows through.

Position wall lights symmetrically on either side of a large wall mirror, artwork, or chimneypiece to create a focal point. They add warm ambient lighting and architectural texture to dining rooms, hallways, or drawing rooms.
