Farcot Swinging Cherub Mantel Clock.

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

Whilst there are examples of swinging cherub clocks for sale from time to time it is very rare to find one by the original inventor, FARCOT of PARIS. He was the person who first came up with the design of making a pendulum swing back to front rather than side to side. Hence the rocking cherub. This clock is signed by him.

The alabaster frame is in good order for it's age but has the usual little nicks associated with this material, adding to the overall ambiance of the piece. The white enamelled dial is in perfect order with no chips, cracks or crazing.

The clock stands on it's original ebonised base with it's original glass dome.

The movement, signed FARCOT PARIS, has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered staff and carries our usual 12mth full parts and labour guarantee.

All cards accepted.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 19th century by French horologists such as Eugene Farcot, these clocks feature a mechanical movement where the pendulum is disguised as a kinetic figure, such as a child or cherub on a swing.

These clocks typically feature carved alabaster or marble bases, cast brass or gilt-bronze decorative figures, enamel dials, and blown glass protective display domes.

Authentic period examples generally display French movement stamps on the back plate, hand-painted enamel dials with Roman numerals, fine bronze casting, and natural age-related oxidisation.

Position the piece on a central mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf alongside understated contemporary ceramics to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern lines.

Dust the glass dome and stone base using a soft microfibre cloth; avoid using water or chemical solvent cleaners on untreated alabaster, as the porous material readily absorbs moisture and stains.
