Antique Karaja runner of traditional Karaja design.

Circa 1900.

The runner has excellent rich colours, and a very rustic feel to the traditional Karaja design. Ideal for a country cottage or farmhouse.

The runner is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

The runner has been hand washed and ready for use or display.

The runner is suitable for heavy domestic floor use.

Karaja rugs are hand-knotted tribal textiles crafted in the Karaja village region of North-West Persia, near Heriz. They are characteristically long and narrow, featuring distinct geometric central medallions alternating in shape, framed by decorative multi-tiered borders.

Traditional Karaja runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. The dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, giving the wool long-lasting chromatic depth and resilience.

Authentic antique Karaja pieces exhibit a combination of square and latch-hooked geometric central medallions along the length of the field. They feature a firm weave, natural colour variation known as abrash, and a slightly coarse wool construction typical of North-West Persian tribal weaving.
