Fine Edwardian Breakfront Open Bookcase, Lovely Original Finish.

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This mahogany bookcase from around 1900 or maybe a tiny touch later is in lovely tidy condition. The finish is pretty much original, we just given it a clean and rewaxing before buffing to bring out the superb colour and graining. This has clearly been well looked after over the last 100 years and has not suffered and serious light fade.

This is a most unusual example with the most useful little drawers just under the top, these boast the original nouveau handles, and the cupboard below that has an astrigal glazed door that has a bevel all round each piece of glass.

Inside the cupboard is a shaped shelf that gives a taller space, perfect for the after dinner port or brandy perhaps, with the glasses handy on the upper shelf. The sides have adjustable shelves that can go up or down to suit your own requirements. These shelves are a good depth at 25cms. This is just exceeding good quality and could fit into most homes, a rather rare item at a very modest price for its quality and condition.

sizes given below are outside of the body, the small back is an additional 14cms high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian breakfront bookcase features a prominent central section that steps forward beyond the flanking side compartments, combining early 20th-century construction with proportions inspired by 18th-century Georgian design.

These storage pieces were typically crafted using dense mahogany, rosewood, or walnut timbers, often accented with cast brass handles, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and glass panel doors.

Authentic period examples exhibit precise joinery, original hand-applied French polish finishes, period-appropriate brass hardware, and timber patination consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

Position the piece as an architectural focal point in a living room or study, balancing rows of hardback books with modern ceramic vessels, framed art, and decorative objects.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood grain, ensuring placement is away from direct radiator heat and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement.
