Japy Freres Rococo Bronze Table Clock ~ Music

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully working ~~

A superb original antique French Rococo clock by the famous maker Japy Freres. Beautifully detailed bronze case with C scrolls, acanthus and shell motifs. A charming cherub is seated to the top plays pipes. Fretted sound panels backed with fabric lighten the design. A glimpse of the pendulum swinging can just be seen.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper, cream with blue lettering and separate minute ring. It is complete with original finely fretted brass hands. There is a rubbed retailers signature to the dial. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Japy Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the bronze patination is in lovely condition with a mellow antique colour. We have replaced the fabric with fresh. The dial has some slight damage at the 12 and 1 o'clock positions and some hairlines and slight chipping next to the winding holes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, Rococo style mantel clocks are characterised by asymmetrical curves, elaborate rocaille scrollwork, foliage motifs, and figurative finials such as cherubs or musicians.

These timepieces were typically constructed with cast bronze or gilt brass cases, enamel dials featuring hand-painted numerals, tempered steel clockwork movements, and glass crystal covers.

Authentic period movements frequently feature maker stamps on the rear brass plate, such as the Japy Freres circular trademark, alongside stamped serial numbers and precise mechanical movement components.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or within a curated shelving unit paired with neutral decorative elements to balance the ornate metalwork.

Dust the bronze case regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid chemical polishes that strip original patination, and have the internal mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
