Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maritime impressionism gained prominence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as artists moved outdoors to capture natural light, dynamic weather conditions, and modern watercraft directly on canvas. The style prioritises mood, atmospheric haze, and fluid water reflections over rigid architectural accuracy.

Artists traditionally applied oil paints composed of natural pigments and drying oils onto linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, or onto wood panels. Layered brushwork and impasto techniques were frequently employed to create texture in sky and water elements.

Authentic period paintings typically display natural age features such as subtle surface craquelure, uniform canvas aging on the reverse, hand-carved stretcher bars, and original signatures rendered in the same paint medium as the main composition.

A muted maritime painting works well hung above a timber sideboard, styled on a gallery wall alongside brass sconces, or framed in a simple tray frame to balance traditional subject matter with clean contemporary lines.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and intense heat sources to prevent cracking and pigment fading. Surface dust should be removed gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush rather than liquid cleaners.
