Library Clock in Satin Wood with Single Chain Fusee C. 1850

19th century
Description

Fine quality Satin wood single chain fuse Library Clock of small proportions.

The 4" square silvered dial with very well executed Fleur - De - Lys hands. The eight day movement with shouldered plates and cut out , London pendulum with stay fast and teared cock.

I think this timepiece has particularly fine proportions and has a very good colour and figuring to the wood. Some Satin wood can be a little flat. Sitting on squashed bun feet which give it that nice squat look.

Thick bevelled glass windows to top and sides. The key is original as is the locks, which both work.

Library clocks are quite rare , especially in Satin wood.

The movement has been fully overhauled and is guaranteed for a year.

9.5" tall, 6.75" wide, 5.25" deep.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A library clock is a compact mechanical timekeeper popular in nineteenth-century Britain, designed specifically for quiet environments such as private studies and libraries. These clocks feature high-quality fusee movements to ensure accurate timekeeping without loud ticking.

Mid-Victorian library clocks commonly utilized fine cabinet timbers such as satinwood, mahogany, or walnut for the outer case. The mechanical movement was crafted from cast brass and steel, housed behind a glass-fronted door.

An authentic fusee movement contains a conical gear connected by a fine chain or gut string to a mainspring barrel. This mechanism equalises the torque of the mainspring as it unwinds, visible upon inspecting the brass plates of the clock movement.

A satinwood clock can be placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, a executive desk, or a structured bookcase. Its warm golden timber contrasts effectively against deep wall colours such as navy, hunter green, or charcoal.

Keep the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the satinwood veneer from drying or fading. Wind the movement regularly using the correct key, and consult a qualified horologist for periodic servicing.
