Early and Fine Bronze, Ormolu and Specimen Marble Clock with Cupid, Silk Suspension Movement.

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1840 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully working ~~

A large, fine and exquisite, early antique French clock depicting Cupid holding a sharpened golden arrow. It is of stunning quality, finest ormolu (finely gilded bronze or bronze doré) mounted on beautifully figured red specimen marble. Cupid is finely modelled in bronze with a lovely, rich patination. The bronze work is by Pailly of Rue Chapon, Paris. Pailly is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers.

The stunning dial is designed as a swag of ribbons in ormolu, set with 12 individual enamel cartouches. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. This type of design does not have a glazed bezel to the front.

The Early French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition. It is is the earlier version of the Pendule De Paris movement with a silk suspension. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell.

Condition of the case is excellent, the gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition, no damage to the cartouches. The dial centre has been polished at some time. The bronze figure has a lovely patina and has been lacquered at some time to preserve this. The marble is in excellent condition with just some tiny nibbles to the edges. A beautiful clock to add to your collection.

Bronzier mark on the movement front plate - Pailly of Rue Chapon Paris

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire figural mantel clocks typically feature neoclassical mythological or historical figures cast in dark patinated bronze, contrasted with gilt bronze ormolu mounts and rich marble bases.

These clocks were crafted using high-grade cast bronze, fire-gilded ormolu, carved specimen marbles such as rouge griotte, and brass clock movements.

Silk suspension movements utilize a fine silk thread suspended from an adjustable crutch to hold the pendulum, a technical characteristic common in French horology prior to the 1840s.

Positioning the clock as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard centre, or library desk allows the classical sculptural form to complement both traditional and modern schemes.

Dust surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes on gilded surfaces, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and oiled by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
