Scottish Bracket Clock by Mitchell & Russell of Glasgow

19th century
Description

An unusual and high quality Lancet top bracket clock by these well known Scottish clockmakers.

The high quality 8 day duration double fusee movement strikes the hours on a bell and is signed to the painted dial Mitchell & Russell, Glasgow. The movement features 5 plate pillars, anchor escapement and strike/silent facility above number XII. The painted round dial has matching blued steel hands. The Lancet top case is veneered with superb flame mahogany to the front elevation and profusely inlaid with ebony throughout. Both sides feature lion head handles and brass silk lined sound frets of a gothic design. The bespoke made mahogany veneered wall bracket is complete with an access door to regulate the long pendulum.

Price: £6,250 / Height: 27" / C.1825

Note: Mitchell & Russell were working during the first half of the 19th century. Based on this particular clock and previous purchases it appear they used a very fine cabinet maker based somewhere in Glasgow. They were also a manufacturer of Church & Tower Clocks. Due to the longer pendulum this clock has always been on a wall bracket. We made the decision to reinstate the lost bracket using the cabinet work of the clock as a guide.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency bracket clock is a spring-driven table clock produced during the early nineteenth century, characterized by refined cabinetmaking, symmetrical architectural shapes such as lancet or gothic arches, brass inlay or mounts, and painted white dials with Roman numerals.

Scottish makers used flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcases, accentuating the wood with brass bezel surrounds, cast brass side handles, ebony stringing, and silk-lined side sound frets.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted dial signatures from prominent Scottish makers and towns, hand-cut dovetail joints inside the casing, heavy cast-brass fittings with age-appropriate patination, and mechanical fusee movements.

A mahogany bracket clock serves as a focal point when placed centrally on a living room mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or anchored alongside books on a deep library shelf.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer warping. Dust the cabinet gently with a soft dry cloth and consult a professional horologist for movement cleaning and oiling every five to seven years.
