A Superb George III Mahogany Press or Estate Cabinet.

18th century
Description

A superb George III mahogany press or estate cabinet of beautiful small proportions.

With the unusual feature of the doors locking at 90 degrees by means of original metalwork, this enables the slides to be fully withdrawn outside of the cabinet whilst contained within the doors.

The feature and also the lack of the front edge on the slides leads me to beleave this was designed to store maps or other documents as it allows easy access in good to inspect them.

Could equally be used today for linen or in the dining room.

The base with twin doors opening to reveal wonderfully fine oak lined drawers.

I think they perhaps housed some sort of collection.

Of superb colour & patination.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed in 18th-century Britain, a press cabinet or linen press was created to store folded household linens and garments behind panelled doors prior to the widespread adoption of modern fitted wardrobes.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany framework, flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joinery, oak secondary timbers, architectural dentil cornices, and bracket feet.

Authentic Georgian presses exhibit hand-planed secondary woods, original cast brass or iron fittings, natural timber shrinkage across wide panels, and highly figured flame mahogany veneers on the door fronts.

Position the cabinet as a anchor piece in a bedroom, hallway, or dining space, pairing its dark mahogany timber with neutral wall tones and natural woven textiles.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually, keeping the timber positioned away from direct heat sources and light to prevent drying or colour fading.
