A rare and wonderful early silver child’s porringer or two handled bowl, with clear London marks for 1659, two years before the restoration of the monarchy, a time when silver was very scarce and opulence frowned upon. London date letter ‘B’, London town mark, lion passant sterling mark and a maker’s mark ‘T K’ with a star above. The maker is not known as this mark belongs to the pre 1681 register destroyed by a fire at Goldsmith’s Hall. A very fine set of marks indeed. Superb naïve chased and embossed design of tulips on a matted ground with prick dot borders. Faint remains of contemporary scratch initials ‘C’ over ‘B H’ on the centre of the plain rim.
Condition: In remarkable condition for its age of 358 years, the marks are very nice, with just some rubbing to one edge of the lion’s head, the chased design has really good definition, and the original scroll handles have not indented the bowl where they join. One of the handles has a small split starting at the top, and a possible old solder repair. There a couple of tiny dinks to the body. I have deliberately not taken the porringer to my silversmith as this would spoil the lovely patina.
Maker: T.K with a star above, London 1659
