Description

A tree-of-life rises up from the underworld through the earthly world into the realms of the spirit on a natural camel-hair field. Like most rugs and bags of the Timuri and Baluch tribes, they are very difficult to photograph. Their subtle, often dark but wool as shiny as velvet, can be the problem for the camera! This one is no exception and to see it 'in the wool', shows the colours in a different light. Balishts in near-mint condition like this one are rare - particularly complete with plain-weave backs. The backs were often removed by unscrupulous rug dealers in Iran and Afghanistan during the early 20th century onwards, so that the woollen-pile faces could be used as floor coverings in the West. This balisht, made by Timuri nomads in western Afghanistan around 1890-1900 is very special and very rare.
