A George III Grand Tour Impression Of Botticelli's "The Birth Of Venus" Oil On Canvas
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Chairman Antiques
A well executed George III oil on canvas copy of Sandro Botticelli''s ''The Birth of Venus'' the original Circa 1486. Very much a Grand Tour piece. Modern frame but sympathetic and muted, certainly not gauche. There are two creased indents as shown but this lovely painting has been rebacked. A pretty impression, it would make an impressive over mantle or study example. It appears to have been re-backed I would guess early 20thC from the timber of the stretchers. The painting is in overall good condition with again the tiny blemishes outlined.
There is evidence of but no remains of a gallery label on the stretcher too. The frame is modern, although aesthetically it works well and whoever framed it took the trouble to tape the edges where clipped in.
A good interpretation and certainly a good decorative item. With The Birth of Venus, Botticelli revived the mythological interests found in Classical antiquity. Specifically, he adopted Venus (or Aphrodite, her Greek equivalent)—a particularly popular figure in ancient art, including the Venus de Milo, a famous sculpture from the first century BC—as his subject. Interest in Botticelli mushroomed in the late 18thC and good copyists created paintings such as this.
