Percy Douglas Hamilton was born in The Cape, South Africa in 1867. By 1871, the family was living in Kensington. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gentleman Cadet on 24th December 1884. He became a Lieutenant in 1886 and a Captain in 1897. During WWI, Major Hamilton commanded the 5th Siege Battery which departed for France on 27th September 1914. By the end of January 1915, he was ordered to take command of the Harwich Garrison. Unfortunately, we have not been unable to establish his locations during the rest of WWI, and, although we were informed that he was at Gallipoli, we have been unable to verify this. Apart from the usual WWI decorations, he became a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and a Companion of the Order of the Bath and was awarded the Military Order of Savoy which is an Italian order.

We believe that by the end of WWI, he was a Lieutenant Colonel and Temporary Brigadier General, but was promoted to Brigadier General circa 1927. He was retired by 1934 and died on 15th May 1936, leaving his widow Adeline Diana (nee Sweeting) (1889-1964), who he had married in Marylebone in 1916.
