This is a stunning Japanese vase in bronze inlaid with silver which dates from the 19th century. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging. Ikebana dates back to around the 6th century when Buddhism came to Japan and it evolved from the Buddhist practice of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead. Ikebana has many styles and vases vary a lot. This particular 19th century vase is very striking, measuring 27 cm high. It has a removable shallow flat dish to the top (30cm diameter) which can be lifted out, so giving greater versatility to the designs which could be used. It is bronze which is skilfully inlaid with solid silver. The piece is in very good order save for a couple of minor dents at the bottom back. This has a lovely deep, rich colour and antique patina would make a very good statement piece for a side table or console table.
