Gents 1920s Silver Winegartens Trench Watch

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Vintage Wrist Watch Company

A gents 1920s silver Winegartens Superfine trench style watch.

The watch has a hand-winding movement, probably Swiss private label (made on behalf of Winegartens). It has been fully tested and is working nicely. The Winegartens Superfine has a premium quality jewelled movement which has been nicely detailed, a good sign of quality.

Winegartens used to be a large traditional jewellers in Bishopsgate, London. It was a grand, independent jewellers and they stocked top quality brands such as Rolex and Omega as well as their own Winegartens watches. It was bought by Goldsmiths in the 1980s and became a Goldsmiths store.

This particular watch measures 33mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the screw-on case back for London 1928 with a sponsor’s (or importer’s mark) GS for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items, which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail. The case is in good condition and the screw-on bezel and case back are another nice sign of quality.

The watch glass is in very nice condition.

The signed enamel dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed through the magnifying loupe, there is a faint hairline crack running from the centre to number 10.

A new leather strap has been fitted.
