ROBERT JOHN HAMMOND (1854-1911)
Robert Hammond was a late 19th and early 20th century Birmingham, England painter of genre, figure, and rustic country scenes. His paintings were especially popular with the newly wealthy who had left their native villages and towns toward the end of the nineteenth century seeking opportunities in the emerging 20th century industrialization of Great Britain. Hammond''s paintings were often idyllic, including colourful scenes of country cottages, gardens, and river landscapes, which were an ideal backdrop and reminder of the past for these new urban dwellers. Hammond exhibited extensively between 1882 and 1911. He showed over 40 paintings at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and at the prestigious Manchester City Art Gallery. Hammond''s artwork has sold at auction internationally, including Christie''s and Sotheby''s.
