Birmingham 1900 Solid Silver Leaf and Scroll Engraved Vesta Matchsafe in Very Good Condition.

1900 - 1920
Description

Birmingham 1900 English hallmarked solid silver leaf and scroll engraved vesta matchsafe, with interesting diagonally seamed cover, and match strike to lower edge.

Vesta cases are airtight cases made to contain short friction matches and keep them safe and dry. They were made in many materials, and some in precious metals like this one, usually with gilt linings, to protect against corrosion from the match heads. They were widely made and used from 1890-1920. Many had a loop attached, like this one, to attach to an albert chain. Now, they are very collectable and interesting small antique silver items.

Size-1.75 inches by 1.1 inches.

Weight-20 grams.

Very good quality, with very hard to see line mark to back.

In very good condition.

Declaration

Serpentine Antiques has dated this Silver Vesta Case to the 1900s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable box designed to hold friction matches safely. Popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these cases prevented matches from accidentally igniting in a pocket or handbag.

Antique silver vesta cases were typically stamped or hand-chased from sheets of sterling silver. They feature a spring-hinged lid to keep matches dry and a serrated strike plate positioned along the bottom edge for lighting the match.

Authentic British sterling silver vesta cases carry official hallmarks stamped into the silver, usually including a lion passant mark, an assay office symbol (such as an anchor for Birmingham), a makers mark, and a date letter.

Today, antique silver vesta cases are often repurposed as decorative pendant neck chains or attached to pocket watch fobs. They can also be displayed in glass vitrines or arranged on a desk tray alongside period writing instruments.

Clean sterling silver with a soft microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish formulated to remove oxidisation. Avoid submerging the piece in water to protect the internal steel spring mechanisms from rusting.
