Georgian Welsh Oak Cupboard, Circa 1800

Description

Welsh oak two-part cupboard in superb original condition. This is a very useful and attractive cupboard and is a very distinctive regional design, known as a "Carmarthen coffer".

It is, in effect, a very low linen press and was produced in west Wales to fit under the low eaves of a bedroom in one of the cottages or small farmhouses of the district.

It has a solid boarded top with a bold cornice above a cupboard section which has a pair of doors with raised and fielded gothic-shaped panels, and a row of "dummy" drawers, enclosing a shelved interior. There are lovely twisted spiral columns on either side. The base section has two rows of drawers with turned wooden knobs, raised on bracket feet.

Wonderful original colour and surface patination.
