A Victorian games table is a decorative item of furniture introduced during the 19th century, designed specifically for leisure activities such as chess, draughts, or cards. Often featuring intricate marquetry and inlaid gaming boards, these tables served both a functional role and as a statement piece in formal drawing rooms.

Craftsmen typically used fine hardwoods like walnut, rosewood, and kingwood veneers applied over a solid timber frame. Inlaid chequerboards and floral motifs were created using contrasting wood veneers, often accompanied by cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts and curved cabriole legs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, natural age-related shrinkage lines in the veneer, and hand-chased brass mounts. The underside often reveals raw, hand-sawn secondary woods like pine or oak.

Position the table as a focal point in a living area, alcove, or wide hallway to display its decorative top. It functions well flanked by contemporary accent chairs or as an occasional drink and display table.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the marquetry veneer from lifting or fading.
