Early Victorian Mahogany and Black Leather Writing Table by Johnstone & Jeanes

19th century
Description

This is a very high quality entirely original early Victorian writing desk by renowned furniture makers Johnstone & Jeanes. The whole table is beautifully made with warm mahogany throughout, pedestal side supports, turned centre stretcher, elegantly carved feet and support. Two concealed drawers one baring the stamp 'Johnstone & Jeanes 67 New Bond Street London. The stand out feature to me though is the patinated black leather top with shaped corner and fabulous Greek key tool work around the entire boarder. Overall condition is very good with expected aged patina but no major faults.

Johnstone & Jeanes was a premier 19th century London cabinet maker. Operating from 67 New Bond Street. Johnstone & Jeanes served an elite, aristocratic clientele and exhibited at major international exhibitions before evolving into Johnstone & Norman in 1885

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early Victorian writing tables typically feature mahogany or rosewood construction, rounded corners, trestle or turned legs, and a leather inset writing surface. They represent the design transition from Regency proportions to more substantial Victorian forms during the mid-19th century.

Primary timbers included mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, paired with oak or pine drawer linings. The writing surface was commonly fitted with gold-tooled leather, anchored with brass hardware and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces show period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer joints, timber shrinkage along the grain, and potential makers stamps on the drawer edges or lock plates. Original brass locks often bear stamped maker names, while the timber exhibits natural patination.

Position the table near a window or focal wall to function as a home working station or console desk. Combining the dark timber structure with modern task lighting and minimalist seating creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Dust the wooden framework regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Maintain the leather inset using a specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
