Antique English Oak Corner Cupboard on Stand C.1880

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A charming and highly practical antique English oak corner cupboard on stand, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880.

Beautifully proportioned and designed specifically to make use of a corner space, this unusual piece combines a traditional enclosed corner cupboard with an elegant open two tier stand below.

The upper section features a single panelled cupboard door, framed by attractive moulded detailing and topped with a substantial projecting cornice. The door retains its decorative metal escutcheon and original style key, adding considerably to the period character of the piece.

Inside, the cupboard provides three shaped corner shelves, offering useful storage or display space for glassware, ceramics, books or decorative objects.

One particularly useful feature is its versatility: the upper cupboard can be separated from the lower stand and wall-mounted independently, allowing the piece to be used either as the complete tall corner cabinet shown in the photographs or as a traditional wall-hanging corner cupboard.

Wall Depth / distance along each wall: approximately 42 cm

Good antique condition with a solid and sturdy construction.

There are age related marks, scratches, small knocks, colour variations and areas of wear throughout, consistent with the age and previous use of the piece. These have been retained as part of its authentic antique character and patina.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A corner cupboard on stand is a space-saving storage unit designed to fit flush into the 90-degree angle of a room, combining an enclosed upper cabinet elevated on an open-shelved lower frame. Popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces provided both concealed storage and open display areas.

Late Victorian corner cupboards were commonly constructed from solid English oak, utilising traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints and hand-fitted fielded door panels. The timber was typically finished with clear wax or lacquer to showcase the natural wood grain.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces feature age-consistent wear, original brass or iron keyhole escutcheons, and traditional backboard construction showing historical tool marks. Examining the interior surfaces often reveals unpolished timber and hand-cut joinery.

Position the piece in an unutilised dining room or hallway corner to add vertical structure and functional storage. Complement the warm wood tones by displaying contemporary ceramics or glass decorative objects on the lower open shelves.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood movement.
