Antique Mahogany Regency Style Tilt Top Dining Table C.1890

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A handsome antique mahogany tilt top dining table, dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1890 and displaying strong influences from the elegant furniture designs of the English Regency period.

The table features a generously proportioned rectangular top with beautifully rounded corners and a moulded edge. It is supported by an impressive central pedestal with finely reeded and fluted detailing, terminating in four elegant swept legs.

Each leg is similarly reeded and finished with a brass cap and castor, giving the table a particularly refined appearance.

One of its most attractive and practical features is the traditional tilt-top mechanism. The tabletop can be released and raised into a vertical position, allowing the table to occupy considerably less floor space when not in use. The underside retains its traditional construction and brass fitting.

The mahogany has developed a wonderfully rich character over many decades. The tabletop displays considerable historic patina, including surface marks, scratches, variations in colour and areas of wear consistent with age and use. We consider these part of the character of the piece and have deliberately not over-restored the surface.

The base presents particularly well, with the carved and reeded detailing, brass fittings and castors providing an elegant contrast to the aged tabletop.

Very good antique condition overall, with a strong natural patina. The tabletop shows numerous age-related marks, scratches, rubbing and variations in finish, clearly visible in the photographs. The table retains the character expected from a genuine antique piece of this age..

A Regency style tilt-top table features a central pedestal base and a top mechanism that tilts vertically when not in use to conserve space in dining rooms or parlours. Popularised in early 19th-century Britain, these designs frequently feature sweeping splayed legs and brass castors.

These tables were traditionally constructed using solid mahogany or rich timber veneers, paired with brass hardware including brass toe caps, castors, and a brass tilt-catch mechanism positioned beneath the tabletop.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-assembled brass catch mechanisms under the top, reeded or turned central pillars, hand-cut joinery, and natural wear or patination on the brass castors and timber base.

In contemporary settings, the table can function as a focal dining piece paired with modern chairs, or be positioned with the top tilted upward against a wall as an architectural accent piece when space is limited.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern spray waxes, direct heat sources, and direct sunlight to protect the original finish.
