George II Cuban Mahogany Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

This George II Cuban mahogany chest of drawers dates to circa 1750 and is constructed in solid Cuban mahogany, retaining its original gilt ormolu mounts, brushing slide and concealed castors.

The rectangular top is made from solid Cuban mahogany and displays excellent colour, patina and figure. It is finished with a bold moulded ruler edge above a double stepped moulding, which conceals the original brushing slide. The slide retains its original gilt brass ring pull handles and is constructed in figured, unpolished mahogany. Beneath are two faux mahogany drawers, maintaining the symmetry of the façade.

The chest has an attractive low waisted outline with an unusual drawer arrangement. It is fitted with two drawers positioned at either side, known as end drawers, which account for the pair of faux drawers beneath the brushing slide. This thoughtful arrangement allows the second row of drawers to remain fully accessible even when the brushing slide is extended.

The two short and two long graduated drawers are constructed in English oak with fine Cuban mahogany dovetails and solid mahogany drawer fronts. They retain their original George II gilt ormolu backplates, escutcheons, swan neck handles and gilt brass locks. A particularly pleasing cabinet making detail can be seen when the drawers are opened, where the cabinet maker has carefully marked a faux veneer line along the top edge of each drawer to give the appearance of a veneered front.

The chest stands on shallow mahogany bracket feet above concealed castors, with a solid thumbnail moulding completing the base.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George II period furniture, produced in Britain between 1727 and 1760, is defined by balanced proportions, the widespread adoption of dense imported mahogany, and refined brass hardware. Pieces from this era often display sturdy bracket feet and functional features designed for practical domestic use.

Chests from this period were primarily constructed using Cuban mahogany or walnut frames, with secondary timbers such as pine or oak used for drawer linings. Drawers feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, cockbeaded edges, and cast brass drop handles with decorative escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints of irregular width, hand-sawn timber marks on back panels, and natural wood shrinkage along the grain. Original period hardware leaves distinct footprint marks on the wood underneath the brass plates.

A classic mahogany chest functions well alongside neutral walls and modern lighting fixtures to balance its visual weight. Positioning contemporary artwork or simple ceramic vessels on top creates a clean contrast between historic woodwork and modern decorative elements.

Dust the wood surface regularly using a clean, soft cloth, and apply a light coat of beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and finish cracking.
