Regency Rosewood Desk Attributed to William Trotter of Edinburgh

19th century
Description

This Regency rosewood desk attributed to William Trotter dates to circa 1820 and is designed in the Grecian taste, with a cross banded rosewood top, carved trestle supports and finely detailed rosewood veneers throughout.

The black leather writing surface has recently been laid with broken gilt tooling and an antique finish, complementing the rosewood cross banded top with cross grain edging above the shallow frieze.

The frieze is fitted with two full length mahogany lined drawers, retaining the original solid rosewood turned knobs and finely made dovetail construction to the drawer linings. The reverse and sides are veneered with lively long grain rosewood panels, finished with protruding rounded corners above a tightly carved egg and dart moulding.

The concealed shaped stretcher beneath the top provides additional support to the construction while allowing the desk to retain its elegant Grecian style trestle end supports. The inverted C scrolls with carved tulips flank tapered rosewood veneered end supports, centred by stylised rosettes above broad scrolls terminating on egg and dart moulded plinth bases.

The end standards feature double reed edging that tapers down to matching upright C scrolls, positioned above rosewood beaded plinth supports. The solid rosewood feet are scrolled, reeded and crisply carved, positioned beneath a lively veneered inverted cavetto moulding with concealed gilt brass castors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency writing desks, produced roughly between 1811 and 1830, are defined by classical Greek and Roman influences, symmetrical proportions, and rich dark wood veneers such as rosewood and mahogany. Features typically include leather inset writing tops, frieze drawers, and trestle or pedestal end supports with carved paw feet.

Cabinetmakers of the Regency period favoured exotic timbers like Brazilian rosewood and Cuban mahogany. Secondary woods, such as pine or oak, were used for drawer linings, while writing surfaces were routinely fitted with gilded or blind-tooled leather.

Authentic Regency desks display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, and distinct deep graining characteristic of early 19th-century rosewood. Look for fine carved detailing on the trestle supports and legitimate age-related wear around the drawer handles and base.

Position the desk as a focal point in a dedicated home office, gentlemans library, or large drawing room. Pair it with a contemporary desk chair or a classic leather captains chair to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern utility.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent the timber veneer from fading or drying out. Treat the wood periodically with a high-grade beeswax polish, and use specialized leather conditioner on the inset writing top.
